Everyone wants to get ahead at work and be the best they can be. It usually means some additional work and much more responsibility, but it also means more money, a more comfortable life, and opportunities galore. The key to getting ahead at work is to be the most effective employee possible by over delivering on each of your assignments and getting yourself noticed by those that matter most.
But how can you become that effective employee and make yourself known to those who count? The secret to being effective at work lies in how you perform your work and in the what work that you actually perform.
To be effective at work, you have to do the opposite of what most “I just want to get paid” employees do every day. Too many less than effective employees arrive at work, turn on the computer and begin their day sifting through the emails they have in their inbox. According to
Verne Harnish, author of
Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, “whether you get 20 emails or 200, there are always a few that draw you into others’ priorities instead of you controlling your own priorities.”
You can become more effective at work by controlling your priorities and doing the most important thing that will move the business ahead the very first thing in the morning. By doing this you will free up the rest of the day to do other important things and some menial tasks—like checking emails. Working on the most important thing first every day will also help you will avoid procrastination and the stress that comes with it.
Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric and author of the book
Winning, suggests that regardless of your position in a company, you should always strive to make your boss look smarter and better. One sure way to make your boss look better is to do the projects and tasks that he cares about. If he does not care about a project, it doesn’t deserve to be in the highest spot on your list of priorities.
To be more effective at work your job needs to become making your boss look great, so that he will help you reach your goals without incident. If you make your boss look smarter by doing a good job, he will be perfectly willing to point you in the right direction of existing opportunities and perhaps even create advancement opportunities for you. By making his priorities your own, doing the most important tasks first thing in the morning on a daily basis, over delivering, and completing projects in an outstanding and timely manner, you will become a much more effective employee and write your own ticket for your career advancement.
