One of the best ways to stand out at work and move quickly up the ladder is by demonstrating that you are a good leader. And while it is true that there are born leaders in the world, leadership is a skill that can be developed and honed by just about anyone.

A good leader is both a teacher and a delegator. He has developed the ability to effectively teach and mentor those on his team and has the confidence to delegate important responsibilities to those in his stewardship.

Here are three suggestions on how you can become a better leader:

  1. Know your team A leader provides goals, vision, and motivation for his team, but in order to do so, he or she must learn and know what is needed from each team member. As a leader, you need to identify the interests, skills, talents, strengths and weaknesses of your team members. Armed with that knowledge, you must learn how to use those interests, skills, talents, strengths and weaknesses to the advantage of your team.
In order to freely learn and know your team, you must consistently make yourself available for advice and support. They must know that you are there for them to help them succeed, and in turn they will work together with you to achieve the goals of the team.

  2. Establish goals and commit to their accomplishment. As a leader, you need to establish goals and figure out how you want your team to accomplish those goals. You don't have set all of the team's goals by yourself. If your team is involved in setting the goals, they will be more involved, inspired, and committed to accomplishing the desired results.
A good way to ensure yours and the team's commitment to achieving the goals is by telling people outside of the team what your goals are. This adds another level of accountability for achieving your team's goals and increases the amount of overall commitment.
  3. Know and be yourself. Becoming a better leader requires that you know yourself well and that you be yourself. You need to know your strengths and your weaknesses and be consistent in your actions. Being yourself lets your team members know that you are not only a genuine individual, but that you are also comfortable in your role as a leader. And being consistent in your actions lets your team members know that they can count on you, and as a result their trust in you as a leader will increase.
Remember that you must also strive to grow as a leader, so be sure to evaluate and take appropriate risks that will help you and your team grow together. Continually search for new opportunities and listen to the input and ideas from your team, your competition, and your mentors to plan out new strategies for success.
